many of us suppress our feelings and emotions, especially the negative ones. I also did this almost always because I just thought that way I would not feel anxious, sad, angry or whatever. I thought by suppressing this feeling I would eliminate it.
but one problem with this technique is: You still feel sad, you still feel anxious, you still feel angry. Suppressing your feelings never did and never will work, they won’t go away by pushing them away. Sometimes they even become stronger. Maybe you think when it comes to negative emotions it is normal to feel bad, but it isn’t.
Often people say: well, you really need to feel those feelings in order to let them go. You may think that you feel them because you feel the sadness, the hurt or the anger but still they won’t go away – why is that? It is because you are not feeling the feeling, you are feeling your reaction to the feeling. You hurt because you suppress this feeling.
The thing that is hurting you is not the feeling, what hurts you is how you react. The name feeling itself says that it needs to be felt. The purpose of a feeling is to be felt, nothing else. It’s purpose is not to hurt or damage you. You are scared of your feelings for no reason.
The next time you have a negative emotion or feeling I want you to sit down and try a new technique. Find out if it works for you, maybe it will, maybe it won’t. But the chance that you could find a way to finally overcome bad feelings should be motivation enough to at least give it a try. Just as I did and find out if this is worth it.
Technique: really feel your feelings:
Sit on your bed and meditate for a few minutes, really calm both your mind and body. Then start to feel in your body, listened to your body. Find out where those emotions are located in your body. Concentrate on this feeling being there. Open your security gates, really open yourself up to the feeling. Just sit there and feel. Nothing else. Don’t judge the feeling, don’t wait for it to go away. Meanwhile breathing deep and staying calm.
You will find out that it will go away, by itself. Without you needing to push it away. You will find that it will not hurt you in any way, it will just be there.
Sending Love and Happiness your way, Sarah.
