Today I am going to talk to you about a topic that us really important to understand if you want to get the most out of your life. Us humans often tend to think negative about anything possible.. we tell ourselves that we are not able to do it, it is not going to work, this day is going to be bad, I will fail the test, this relationship will never work, I won’t earn enough money to pay my rent this month.. and on and on and on. We basically never stop producing negative thoughts – and the creepy thing is that most of the time: we are not even aware of this. We just think them without noticing it.
You may think well if I don’t even notice them, then where is the problem. Or you think those negative thoughts are valuable because they motivated you to work harder – because you obviously don’t want the negative results. But I have to tell you that you are wrong, thinking that many unconscious (or even conscious) negative thoughts is a huge problem.
First of all: you are not consciously aware of them, okey, but that does not mean that your subconscious is not aware of them. Because it is damn well aware of them! As I told you in my previous blogpost about the Power of Affirmations your subconscious will believe anything you tell it if you just say it enough times, it doesn’t even matter if you really believe what you are saying/thinking. Your subconscious listens, and after some time you really programmed it into believing this, you changed your self image.
As you can now imagine there are two ways to program your subconscious – first into something positive, second into something negative. And now ask yourself what you are doing with all your negative thoughts.
The second problem is that you think those negative thoughts will motivate you. You think you fail the test – so you learn more. You think you are not able to pay the rent – so you work harder. And so on. But this is just a misconstruction you made. Just imagine how more motivated you would be if you thought positive. “I’m going to learn a lot now so I will easily pass the test”, “I want to be able to pay my rent, so I work hard and I will achieve this goal.”. If you go positive into a situation your actions arise out of your positive thoughts . You are motivated because you really want to do this, because the result (your goal) is worth it and you love working hard in order to achieve this!
You won’t feel that tired and floppy after working hard if you went positive into the situation, but if you go into the situation negative – motivated by fear that you are not going to pass a test or whatever – you will feel bad after it, not even happy that you achieved the right results because you are only able to see the hard work that you put into it, the stress and pain from doing so.
Another important thing when it comes to negative thinking are Self-Fulfilling Prophecies.
As the name itself says it is a prophecy which you make by yourself and then fulfill by yourself. As I said earlier there are cases where negative thinking motivates you to work harder – so in the end you don’t get the bad results you predicted. But there are also many cases where you think something negative will happen, and guess what, in the end it really happens.
This is because you think this negative thing will happen anyway – so it doesn’t matter what you do. Often we don’t even try to take steps in order to prevent the negative outcome, we just let it come because we don’t believe that a positive result is possible. Or we even take steps (unconsciously) to achieve the negative outcome. For example: if you think you will fail the test anyway – you don’t even start to study because you don’t believe that passing the test is achievable for you. But who knows, maybe you would have passed the test easily if you took the right steps.
Maybe you already found out what this means for positive thinking in connection with the self fulfilling prophecy
If you believe into yourself passing the test – you will take the right steps in order to achieve this. Instead of laying in your bed all day watching TV you will sit down at your desk studying. Because you trust yourself passing the test – and you are aware of the fact that in order to achieve this you need to study. The result: you study, you pass the test. You fulfilled your prophecy.
Once you really understand what this means for your thinking, acting and achieving you will realize what a powerful connection this is. You will no longer think senseless negative thoughts 24/7 because you are deeply aware of the impact they can have on your results and by that on your life.
How to change your negative thought patterns:
- the first step is to become aware of them, recognize yourself thinking negative thoughts
- then start to notice yourself acting upon this self fulfilling prophecy
- now change, stop thinking those negative thoughts and replace them with something positive
- start acting upon the positive thoughts
This will be hard in the beginning, especially becoming aware of those thought patterns will take you some time because you are so used to doing this unconsciously. But as everything it will get easier over time and you will soon notice the positive impact this will have in your life!
