What 2017 taught me
“Experience is a brutal teacher, but you learn. My god, do you learn.”
Every experience we make adds something to our life, it’s either a blessing or a lesson. And I think – also the blessings are lessons. It’s important to sit down from time to time and find out what we have been taught by life.
Make this a new part of your Reflection Routine every week/month – to think about what these days taught you, what you can learn from this.
17 Lessons I learned in 2017:
1. This too shall pass
We all go through bad times & good times, we meet people, make experiences, are happy & also sad. Positive things happen, negative things happen. First of all: they all happen for us, they are lessons which we need to learn. Second, they will pass, all of them, no experience is eternal. So when you are in pain – this too shall pass, but also when you are happy – this too shall pass. Embrace the moment as long as you live it.
2. Make yourself a priority
We often tend to invest most of our time & energy into other people and then wonder why we are feeling bad. It’s somehow really dumb. If this is your life, if you are experiencing live in this human form, than why not put the majority of your time & energy into yourself?
3. Go the extra mile
We all have big dreams, but we are all lazy. But if there is something you really want, something that makes you happy by just thinking about it, then get this laziness out of your system and start working for your dreams. Go the extra mile in order to arrive where you really want to be, don’t settle for less than you really want & deserve.
4. Practice Self-Discipline
This is so important & it kinda goes together with point 3 (Go the extra mile). To really reach your goals, to really build the life of your dreams you need to practice Self-Discipline. It won’t be easy. It will be a lot of work, a lot of energy & time. You are going to need a lot of willpower to really go this path. If you don’t have any discipline.. you will give up the moment it gets hard & you are tired.
5. Do what you are afraid of
We all have our personal fears, some are bigger – some smaller. In the end they all hinder us from experiencing life fully – but only if we let them. If it seems as if the fears is controlling you, then you are living an Illusion. You are in this body, you are this soul. This fear can tell you what it wants, you can still decide how you react & act. Don’t let if have so much power to you that you don’t do the stuff you secretly want to.
6. Embrace Nature
Nature is such a wonderful thing, breathtaking. There is nothing more healing than taking a walk through the woods or swimming in the ocean. Nature is like this big present given to us, but sadly we don’t realize it’s preciousness.. we take it for granted.
7. Get up early
This is something I started to do in the summer of 2017. I woke up at around 5, did my morning routine and got started with work. For me there is something really magical about waking up early, rising with the sun & starting your day. It made me be so motivated & inspired. But as always there are people who can work better in the morning & others who do it better at night. You should try it out and find what fits you best.
I love reflection. On Sunday night after your week, at the end of each month & obviously at the end of the year. It helps me to find out what went wrong, why it went wrong, how it made me feel – and what to change so it won’t happen again. It’s a really important part you should do in order to grow from your experiences.
9. Invest your time & energy meaningful
Really think about in what you are investing your time and energy currently. Is this something meaningful, useful – something that is good for you & your life, something that will be good for your future? Or are you wasting your time and energy with stuff that has no deeper purpose? Reevaluate where you want to invest time & energy.
10. Distance from negativity
Negativity is like a drug, people get caught my it. Negativity is like a downward spiral, it’s hard to get out there. If you are in a negative mood, you will see & experience more negativity, if you experience more negativity, your mood will get even worse. And so on. If everything around you is negative too – it will only get worse. So get this negative stuff out of yourself & your life.
11. Stay true to yourself
Don’t do stuff because someone wants you to. Listen to yourself, what feels right & what is right? Decide for yourself and stay there. Don’t feel bad because someone says you should do this or that. Don’t do stuff to fit in. Do stuff for only these thing: to grow yourself, to create the life of your dreams, to do good, do stuff because it feels right for you to do it. And by this I don’t mean to not do it because you are lazy or a bit afraid.. obviously.
12. Be healthy
More energy, strong immune system, increased happiness, better self worth,… being healthy is going to transform your life. Change your diet, drink more water, get enough sleep & workout. It seems like hard work, it actually is. Many people say it’s time waisting and they don’t care about there life because they want to life it to it’s fullest as long as they can. But does “living life to its fullest” really means being ill, having low energy & feeling bad about yourself? I don’t think so.
13. Use opportunities
Life goes us so many opportunities to experience. We don’t use them most of the time.. because we are afraid, lazy or think we don’t have the time. But actually, they are given to us because they would add value to our lives. Maybe not directly what always through what we could learn from them. Strive to use more opportunities in 2018 than you did in 2017. Just say yes more often.
14. Nothing is personal
This is a huge one. We tend to be sad because of how someone treats us, thinking that we are not good enough to be treated well, thinking that they do it because of who we are. Not realizing that how someone acts & treats us is never a response to who we are but always a reflection of who they are.
15. Love yourself unconditionally
Don’t be too hard with yourself, but also not too loose. But love yourself, always. Don’t bring yourself down, don’t tell yourself you are not good enough. Love yourself through the good & the bad. Tell yourself you are good enough & worthy. Give yourself the strength & love you are so hungry for receiving from other people.
Whenever you don’t know something – research it, write it down, take notes. You never know when you can need this knowledge in the future, but it is always good to learn something new. It’s empowering & you will gain understanding of how this world and society works.
17. Everything that happened.. had to happen.
So often we say we regret that we did x and z, that we regret this experience. Most of the time because they hurt us, because they seemed like time wasting. Learn to trust the flow of life, there is something useful in every experience and whatever happened had to happen. Because it brought you where you are now, and where you are now is exactly where you are supposed to be.
