A few days ago i have been talking to a friend about what we think is a big problem in our society and we came to the conclusion that people just don’t set priorities the right way. You may think: well ok, but why is this such a big problem? I will explain!
My long term goal for this year is to start a great business. But every weekend I set the priority to go to a party, dring a lot of alcohol and sleep till the afternoon. 1-2 days after this I will feel tired. I won’t have energy left for working on my goal. I won’t reach it or it will take me a lot longer – i will be frustrated.
What you learn from this:
Where you set your priorities your focus goes, where focus goes energy flows. You may think it’s just a party and it could never change anything. But trust me, setting your priorities right and only concentrating on the important things will change your life.
Sit down at the beginning of the month, the week, the day and specify on which topics you will spend your energy in the days in front of you, you will recognize that everything is a lot easier to reach. Choosing too much topics to focus your energy on will distract you from achieving great results because there is just too much. Focus on less!
Of course going to a party every now and then won’t hurt and I’m not saying you should never go. But always keep an eye on your to do & goal list – stay realistic and focused. Starting to set priorities on really important things and focusing your energy on those will help you reach your goals faster and you will gain long term happiness.
Declutter your mind, your to do list, your goals and your daily activities. Always choose wisely on where you spend time and energy. It will also help you to work a lot more productive.
So here are some tips on how to set priorities:
1) Start prioritizing progress
When you decide where to focus your energy ask your self if this task is going to bring you further to your goal. Doing things that are not contributing to your goals doesn’t make a lot of sense. Of course there are things that need to be done regardless like cleaning the bathroom or getting a new haircut. But there are also a lot of small tasks which bring us nothing but time waste. Declutter. Find out what helps your progress and focus on those! (I got this from Brendon Burchard)
2) Choose wisely where you give your attention
Many of us just give their attention to anyone and anything all day long. At the end of the day those people will realize that most of their 24 hours were spent on other people instead of themselves. This is your life, those are your dreams and goals. So make sure that most of your time and attention is spent on yourself! When you try to please anyone else you will eventually loose yourself. Learn to say no.
3) Eat the frog – Method
I always thought it would make sense to do the easy and fast tasks first before heading to the more complex and difficult ones. I thought this would bring me some feeling of victory and keep me motivated. The “Eat the frog” method is about doing the difficult tasks first, it gives you confidence and you are over with this one and can move on. It’s a really good principle and you should give it a try!
4) Eisenhower Method
This Method sets priorities by putting them into four categories. I think even if you don’t act 100% on how it says you should react I think it’s a good way to sort your tasks. What I like about this Method is that it’s not only about the importance but also about the urgency.
Urgent and important – do first
Not Urgent but important – decide
Urgent but not important – delegate
Not urgent and not important – delete
5) ABC Method
Have the pieces of paper – write A on one, B on the next, and C on the third. Then you sort your tasks. The most important go to A, then to B and then C. Now you look at each piece of paper, read through the tasks, which one is the most important from A/B/C? Rank them from 1-whatever.
First you do task A1, then A2 and so on. When you are ready with A go over to B and then C.
I really like the method, you gain a good overview about what needs to be done and you also make sure to always to the most important first.
